God, Christmas has come and gone…but we are not yet in the new year. The nativity scene, glowing with wonder and angels singing “unto us a King is born”, fades so quickly to an awkward menagerie of smelly animals, travel-worn and exhausted parents, and a squalling, needy baby. Our hopes and wishes seem small and foolish in the next-day sunlight. And yet, we trust that You are in it all—the miraculous and the seemingly mundane. Hear us now, and help us believe that You hear:

A prayer for a good start to the year.
Jesus, we ask so much of You sometimes; but somehow You keep showing up, You keep accompanying us, You keep stretching and growing and loving us, through the joyful times and the painful times. You are there, even when we fool ourselves into thinking You aren’t. Startle us with reminders of the wonder the angels and shepherds felt around Your manger; the same wonder that Your followers felt on the morning of that third day—oh what a miracle is Your love for us! Amen!
