Modern Voices in Indigenous Film: Mohawk Girls

On Wednesdays in February, Broad Street Ministry will showcase films written, directed by, and starring indigenous peoples. In Mohawk Girls, documentary filmmaker Tracey Deer captures the lives of three Mohawk teenagers as they struggle with the desire to stay close to their traditional community on the reserve while also wanting to explore the wider world.

Modern Voices in Indigenous Film: Smoke Signals

Based on Sherman Alexie’s short story, “This is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona,” this coming-of-age tale follows the journey of Victor and Thomas, two young Coeur d’Alene men who confront issues of identity and family while on a journey to collect the remains of Victor’s father. Screening will be followed by a discussion with Susan Adelman, creator of the popular “Inside the Characters” film discussion series at Bryn Mawr Film Institute.
