Welcome to Broad Street Ministry's online newsletter, BROADcast! OCTOBER 2010 EDITION! |
WORSHIP @ BSM--October 2010 Schedule Every Sunday at 6 p.m. followed by a delicious free dinner! We gather together every week out of a deep gratitude to God for the multitude of gifts we experience every day, despite a world that perpetuates a fearful mentality of scarcity. We gather together to remind ourselves and each other that hope is real and God is moving and working in this world. We hear these reminders and express our gratitude through visual arts, dance, and the Word spoken, heard, and sung. We proclaim God's abundance by participating in the sacrament of Communion, a table to which all are welcome. Your presence and participation at worship is a precious gift, and we hope that you'll join us for any or all parts of worship, every Sunday evening at 6 p.m. We extend table fellowship by eating supper together after the service, served family-style. FREE PARKING is available on Sundays along the south side of Pine St between Broad & 13th streets. Pick up a parking permit from the vestibule and throw it on the dashboard--or download it from the BSM website by clicking here. Breaking Bread UPDATE: Extended Hours, 11a.m.-2:30p.m.! As you already know, Breaking Bread was never just about food. There are many places our guests could go to if that was all that mattered. What Breaking Bread has always been about is hospitality. Now we are offering more hospitality than ever before with extended hours, more services, and more opportunities to spend time creating art, conversing with each other, or just hanging out for a little while longer over coffee and dessert. The mealtime is unchanged--it is still from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. After lunch guests are now invited to go to the larger room on the lower level. The therapeutic arts table is now downstairs & tables are set up for guests who may want to play chess, chat over coffee, or even play a spirited round of Spades. We'd love for you to join us on your lunch break--come on by, enjoy some lunch, make some art, or play some games. A Special Donation Opportunity: Each week we give numerous personal care items away to our guests who are unable to afford them on their very limited income. We are able to do this because of generous donations of these items from people in the community. We are currently looking for more donations of these very important personal care items. If you, your family, church, or synagogue would like to help us with this effort please contact our Community Impact Coordinator, Kirsten King at 215-735-4847 orkirsten@broadstreetministry. Thank you in advance! Your donations make a real and deeply felt difference! |

BSM's Visioning the Good Society Update! Broad Street Ministry (BSM) is going back to school this fall, kicking off the second year of Visioning the Good Society, an innovative service learning program. Students from Shipley School, Episcopal Academy, William Penn Charter School, and Westtown Academy will connect with more than two dozen public-benefit organizations who are effecting positive social change in Philadelphia. Students will engage with issues in which BSM has been active since its inception in 2005: HIV/AIDS, therapeutic arts and recovery, those suffering from homelessness and domestic violence. After serving with and learning from the city’s most dynamic organizations, students will delve into important issues of social change through a unique experiential curriculum developed by BSM. Combining experience on the ground with classroom instruction gives students a much fuller vision of a range of subjects, from poverty to criminal justice. Liam O’Donnell, BSM's program creator and director said, “The students were more than participants; they deeply engaged at a level that was impressive and inspiring. Our hope is that Visioning the Good Societywill be the seed from which we can grow a multi-level dynamic service learning program that will engage students at a variety of levels and with a diversity of subjects.” Questions?
