Welcome to Broad Street Ministry's online newsletter, BROADcast! DECEMBER 2010 EDITION! |
WORSHIP @ BSM--December 2010 Schedule Every Sunday at 6 p.m. followed by a delicious free dinner! Broad Street Ministry believes that worship is at the heart of our community's weekly life. This is where we re-encounter the same God who moved across the waters and voyages with us upon life's journey. Even when we're not sure of our destination or the road seems perilous, we know that we are not alone. In the midst of our sorrows, joys, and doubts, God has promised to remain faithful and ever graceful. During worship we experience God in a number of ways- through the visual arts, spoken word, a chorus of uplifted voices, deep in prayer, and the sacrament of Communion. Wherever you find yourself spiritually, we welcome and value your presence among us whenever you choose to join us. Come and praise the God who is with us through it all. Come and listen for a Word from a God whose name is Love. Come, and worship. We extend the table fellowship from communion into a dinner served family-style after worship, where we get to know each other a little better as we share a delicious meal. FREE PARKING is available on Sundays along the south side of Pine St between Broad & 13th streets. Pick up a parking permit from the vestibule and throw it on the dashboard--or download it from the BSM website by clicking here. No Barriers Day & World AIDS Day Wednesday December 1st, 5:30p.m. For the past five years we have joined with AIDS Fund and Sapphire Fund to create the city's largest World AIDS Day event. We're so excited to host this year's event on Wednesday December 1st from 5:30-7:30p.m. in our Cathedral Dining Room. Last year we hosted approximately 300 guests and we look forward to even greater participation this year! Please join us for an evening of art, education, celebration, and remembrance. This year's performers include: Smoke, Lilies, and Jade Art Initiative and the Philadelphia's Gay Men's Chorus. Former Project Runway contestant Jack Mackenroth will be the evening's emcee. In addition, we'll be sharing a delicious sit-down dinner alongside members from community organizations who work tirelessly year-round to serve those living with HIV and AIDS. This year we are happy to announce that we're combining our monthly No Barriers Dinner (Philadelphia's most "dangerous" dinner party!) with our World AIDS Day event! Pastoral Leadership Gathering in Review November 9-11, over 100 pastors and church leaders gathered together at Arch Street Presbyterian Church and Broad Street Ministry to have a new conversation. World renowned organizational development consultant Peter Block and Professor John Franke of Biblical Theological Seminary facilitated practical and theological discussions. Participants also enjoyed acquainting themselves with the city of Philadelphia by taking a guided walk, munching on soft pretzels, and convening during happy hour at the local establishment Time. Church leaders came from all over the country, from a wide variety of congregational contexts, and with many levels of experience. All of the participants brought insights and struggles from their diverse experiences into lively and life-giving discussions. By making one another the experts, pastors constructed new questions, discovered one another’s fears, and built a new sense of community among their colleagues. One participant commented, “In light of the challenges that our churches are facing today, this is a breath of fresh air and brings new hope and vision for the future.” Check out this article from the Presbytery of Philadelphia by clicking here! | Peter Block Facilitating Conversation Pastors Exploring Philadelphia |

This Advent, join BSM as we integrate the arts into our communal process of waiting for a savior. Together we will explore ideas about time, memory, and faith as we reflect on three films by the Russian director, Andrei Tarkovsky. After each viewing, there will be a facilitated discussion about the film as it relates to our own experiences of waiting during this season.
