September Broadcast!

Welcome to Broad Street Ministry's online newsletter, BROADcast!
SEPTEMBER 2010 EDITION!
WORSHIP @ BSM--September 2010 Schedule
Every Sunday at 6 p.m.
followed by a delicious free dinner!
Worship is the heart of BSM--it is a time set apart for all kinds of people to come together and experience the Spirit of God moving in our midst.
We gather together to:
  • hear the Gospel proclaimed
  • testify to God's goodness through word, song, and art
  • offer gifts of gratitude
  • share Communion with each other
  • build relationships with our neighbors
We hope that you'll join us for any or all parts of worship, every Sunday evening at 6 p.m.
We also extend table fellowship by eating good food together following the service, served family-style.
Come, and bring your questions, your sorrows, your joys, and your gifts.
Come, and worship.
FREE PARKING is available on Sundays along the south side of Pine St between Broad & 13th streets. Pick up a parking permit from the vestibule and throw it on the dashboard--or download it from the BSM website by clicking here.

Checking in on BSM's SENIOR BOXES:

On Tuesday, August 17th, 30 of our neighbors came and received supplemental food boxes from the federal government through our partnership with Philabundance. In August we were able to obtain the services of a Mandarin translator to help us connect further and build deepening relationships with our neighbors who are not fluent in English.
In the three months of the program we have distributed over 2,700 lbs of food, which is the same weight of an adult giraffe.

We are thrilled that this program is growing, and we thank YOU for your support and referrals.

If you know of someone who qualifies (see requirements below) tell them to stop by Breaking Bread (every Thursday, doors open @ 11) or call 215 735 4847 ext. 21. We have over 45 people signed up to receive boxes and are also open to sign up anyone who qualifies.

To qualify for the program, people must be a resident of Philadelphia, at least 60 years of age, and earn income at or below 130% of the Federal Poverty Income guidelines (less than $1,174 a month for a single person).

Contact our Financial Director Shawn Hyska for more information or to sign up:
shawn@broadstreetministry.org; or 215-735-4847 (x21).

BSM's NO BARRIERS DINNER!
September 29th 6:00-7:30 p.m.
What would it look like for those who pass each other everyday on our city streets to stop and learn about each other?
We hope it would look something like the No Barriers Dinner, affectionately called the city's "most dangerous dinner party"!
Help us welcome all of the incoming college students of Philadelphia at our first NBD of the fall with YOUR presence.
Join us in extending hospitality to these new faces and returning friends while you enjoy delicious food prepared by our own Chef Marcel and entertaining music from local artists!
It's magical...you won't want to miss it!
The Motley Order Choir...
coming your way September 19th!
The Motley Order Choir's sabbath is quickly coming to a close, and we are excited for them to lead us in worship again starting on September 19th.
We have had a fruitful time of rest, rehearsal, and fellowship. Rehearsals are continuing throughout September, and we hope you'll consider joining us!
Choir rehearsals are open to everyone, and there is no obligation to sing in worship right away. No audition or music-reading ability required, just an openness to listen and learn from our worship leaders, Wendy and Tony.
The magic of the Motley Order Choir is found in its immense diversity of singers, which means we need more people like YOU!
Rehearsals are every other Wednesday evening, starting at 7 p.m., and typically run until 8 or 8:30. Come join us for dinner at 5:45 p.m. and then head up to the sanctuary.
The next month's rehearsal dates are:
September 1st
September 15th
September 22nd (yes, that's two weeks in a row!)

GETTING CREATIVE @ BSM:
We need YOU!
Monday September 6th @ 7p.m.

BSM is constantly seeking to develop, uplift, and deepen the value it places on arts and culture. Each and every week we welcome into our space events of all shapes and kinds, from programs like Last Mondays, theater performances like The Duchess of Malfi , to a continual stream of musical performing artists. To further incorporate arts and culture into the life of our community, we hope to create space EVERY Monday night to produce arts programming featuring our very own artists from BSM. Whether they are performances or educational opportunities we are looking to engage the community of BSM in dreaming about possible creative programs.

The possibilities are endless but this effort will only succeed with help from YOU!

Any and all people interested in future arts and culture programming at BSM are invited to come out to a
special meeting on Monday September 6th at 7 p.m.

We'll give you a glimpse of some upcoming programs but more importantly we'll envision together what could be.
Come and share your ideas and show your support!

It's that time of year again...
to WELCOME SEMINARIANS!

Each year BSM lives out its call to be a teaching congregation by welcoming a group of seminary students into the fray to not only serve this community and city but to have a unique place to reflect on what it means to "do" and "be" church.
We're thrilled with the six--that's right, six!--who will be joining us this year: Hailey Braden Lynch, Laura Colee, Alex Creager, Andy Greenhow, Brenna Nickel, and Jen Strickland de Salazar.
They will bring their gifts for ministry and inquisitive spirits as they enhance their understanding of what is possible for all of God's people.

From The Well and The Duchess of Malfi:
Creativity Workshop & Interactive Theater
BSM is excited to announce another artistic collaboration coming your way this fall! We are hosting a fabulous production of The Duchess of Malfi, a play about the story of a young widow who marries against the will of her two powerful brothers, and then finds herself thrust into a world of spies, deceit and peril.
An interpretive twist on John Webster's thrilling tragedy, Philadelphia Artists' Collective's (PAC) inaugural production promises to be a breathtaking piece of theatre.
Performances will run from September 23rd through October 9th.
In addition to performances of The Duchess of Malfi on-site at BSM, our Facilitator of Transformative Arts, Becca Blake, and PAC's Artist in Residence, Martin Campos, are collaborating to bring you an extraordinary opportunity to integrate your personal exploration of the creative process with a behind-the-scenes look at the production of The Duchess of Malfi through a seminar series called From the Well.
Do you find yourself doodling at work, but have never thought your skills were "good enough" to take a drawing class?
Do you love reading anything and everything, but haven't really considered writing your own poetry, fiction, or memoir?
Then this seminar is for YOU!

We'll have four sessions throughout September, culminating in a special exhibition of pieces created during the seminar, to be unveiled on September 29th, with a talk-back with the actors and directors of The Duchess of Malfi.
In addition to workshops on Wednesday nights from 7:30-9:00p.m., there will be optional open rehearsals on Tuesday nights from 6:30-7:30p.m. where you can come and squeeze in some extra time to work on your projects.

If you've got your own paper and charcoal, canvases and paints, notebooks and pens, bring 'em!

If you need help getting supplies, email Becca at
becca@broadstreetministry.org, talk to her at Breaking Bread, or call 215 735 4847...we will do our best to accommodate you.
This is just a month-long seminar, so mark your calendars now!

What's New...on the BSM Blog!
What does the Back to School season & BSM have to do with each other?
For some BSM families the new school year has already begun. For others the year will begin just after Labor Day. One common factor that likely unites a number of us here at BSM is that there are still various items that need to be garnered for this fast approaching school year – school supplies, new clothes, the new cell phone to keep in closer touch… all the basics for this hurried, overscheduled world we all seem to be dealing with... read more here
