BROADcast: February 2011 Edition!

February 2011
Welcome to Broad Street Ministry's online newsletter, BROADcast!
FEBRUARY 2011 EDITION!
WORSHIP @ BSM--February 2011 Schedule
Every Sunday at 6 p.m.
followed by a delicious free dinner!

Broad Street Ministry believes that worship is at the heart of our community's weekly life. This is where we re-encounter the same God who moved across the waters and voyages with us upon life's journey. Even when we're not sure of our destination or the road seems perilous, we know that we are not alone. In the midst of our sorrows, joys, and doubts, God has promised to remain faithful and ever graceful. During worship we experience God in a number of ways- through the visual arts, spoken word, a chorus of uplifted voices, deep in prayer, and the sacrament of Communion.

Wherever you find yourself spiritually, we welcome and value your presence among us whenever you choose to join us.
Come and praise the God who is with us through it all.
Come and listen for a Word from a God whose name is Love.
Come, and worship.
We extend the table fellowship from communion into a dinner served family-style after worship, where we get to know each other a little better as we share a delicious meal.
FREE PARKING is available on Sundays along the south side of Pine St between Broad & 13th streets. Pick up a parking permit from the vestibule and throw it on the dashboard--or download it from the BSM website by clicking here.

Come Celebrate Phat Tuesday With Our Own Motley Order Choir
Tuesday, March 8th @ 7:00 p.m.
The worldwide church is gearing up for Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent- a season of fasting and prayer. As people often give up guilty pleasures (chocolate, facebook, etc.) during the 40 days of Lent, Fat Tuesday became a day to indulge in a final feast with friends and family.
We hope the entire BSM community will stuff themselves with good music at our first Phat Tuesday Concert! The Motley Order Choir will perform a wide variety of music while personal stories from the BSM community will be interwoven throughout the evening, providing a rich tapestry of voices.
For more information, contact Wendy Gaynor atwendy@broadstreetministry.org or (215) 735-4847.

One Book, One Philadelphia Events
Throughout February, BSM will host a series of film screenings and book discussions capturing the voices and experiences of indigenous artists. Below are brief introductions to the works that we'll be highlighting this month. Please join us!

"War Dances"
Award winning author Sherman Alexie offers a collection of short stories and poems describing the beauty, and sometimes horror, of human relationships.
February 2nd and 9th @ 6:30 p.m.

"Mohawk Girls"
Filmmaker Tracey Deer intimately documents the lives of three exuberant and insightful Mohawk teenagers as they decide whether to remain at the Kahnawake Native Reserve or strike their own paths.
February 2nd @ 7:30 p.m.

"Smoke Signals"
Inspired by a short story in Sherman Alexie's "Lone Ranger and Tonto: Fistfight in Heaven", the two main characters struggle with their own identities in death's wake.
February 23rd @ 7:30 p.m.

"The Only Good Indian"
Set during the early 1900s, a boy is taken from his family and forced to attend a distant Indian `training` school. When he escapes, a bounty hunter of Cherokee descent is hired to find and return him.
February 9th @ 7:30 p.m.

"Rabbit Proof Fence"
Based on true stories, two biracial Aboriginal girls run away from the Moore River Native Settlement to return to their families. Over nine weeks, the girls walk 1,500 miles to return home.
February 16th @ 7:30 p.m.

Red Crooked Sky Performance
Keith Anderson and Dan Garneaux, performers with the nationally-acclaimed Red Crooked Sky Dance troupe, will perform traditional dances from the Ogala Sioux, Cherokee, and Catawba cultures followed by a discussion about the role of the warrior in traditional and contemporary American society.
February 21st @ 7:00 p.m.

BSM's New Kitchen
Thanks to our Congregational Action Partner Doylestown Presbyterian Church, Broad Street's kitchen is getting an upgrade! Doylestown's generosity enables us to better provide delicious meals for our community through added food storage (check out our staff in our new walk in fridge/freezer), dishwasher, and counterspace. Volunteer Meet and Greet
Wednesday, February 23rd, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
BSM's programs are made up of countless moving parts that work together to "make the magic happen" when it comes to extending radical hospitality, enacting justice, and facilitating human flourishing. Without volunteers and their offerings of time, effort, dreams, and energy, BSM wouldn't exist. All different kinds of folks make up our volunteers, with all different kinds of commitments--everyone from weekly kitchen helpers to monthly Breaking Bread servers to twice a year clothing closet organizers.
At the Volunteer Meet and Greet you'll get a chance to take a peek at a few of these moving parts, ask some questions you've always wanted to ask, and explore what it would mean for you or someone you know to involve themselves in this aspect of BSM life.
Here are just some of the programs that will be on display:
Breaking Bread
Mail Service
Therapeutic Art
Youth Initiative
Hospitality
315 Cafe

So, come on out, bring a friend, and join us for our monthly No Barriers Dinner, and while you're here, wander through our Volunteer Meet and Greet downstairs. You'll be able to connect with people integrally involved in each of our programs and take home some vital information about what it means to volunteer at BSM.

BSM Staff Chilling Out in the New Fridge

Barbara Gindhart Volunteers During Dinner
Support the 315 South Cafe
For the fourth year in a row, BSM is hosting the 315 South Cafe this winter through partnerships with The Bethesda Project and The Philadelphia Office of Supportive Housing. The 315 Cafe is an overnight drop-in center aimed to provide shelter to those who are typically understood to be "shelter-resistant": those dealing with the myriad of obstacles related to mental illness, addiction, and chronic homelessness.
Cafe staff often hear requests for personal care items and specific clothing needs. Our guests are most commonly in need of:
  • Deodorant
  • Socks (both men aned women)
  • Underwear (both men and women)
  • Toothbrushes and Toothpaste
Between the Cafe and Breaking Bread lunch every Thursday, BSM gives away hundreds of these items a week. Would you consider picking up a few extra items the next time you're at the store or designating a gift?
Contact Lindsay Barrett at lindsay@broadstreetministry. org if you would like to make a donation. We're also always in need of volunteers! Contact Kirsten King (kirsten@broadstreetministry.org) or Alex
Creager (alexander.creager@ptsem.edu) if you are interested in volunteering. They can also be reached by calling BSM at (215)735-4847.

Artists Performing at Last Mondays

Meet BSM
Chris Bresky and K. Moriah Smith (the K stands for mystery), friendly faces in the BSM community, are active members of Philadelphia’s theatre and film scenes. Chris is an actor/director/writer and Moriah is a costume and wig designer. Both have been residents of Philly for less then two years and are enamored with the artistically feasible rent. After meeting at a Center City karaoke night in September of 2009, Chris and Moriah found their differing faith backgrounds to be both challenging and an opportunity for growth. Determined to find a place of worship focusing on what they considered the most important components of their spiritual lives: serving those who need love, music, and food, they came upon Broad Street Ministry. Both remember walking into BSM on a random day to get information and finding the building alive with activity. Chris and Moriah are happy to have found what they had been so intently looking for: a congregation full of diversity as well as many similar stories- a huge comfort in a new place; a visibly active belief of Jesus's words to give power to those with less; good music that made their souls sing, and good food... really good food.
